Karl L. Barkley II, M.D., came to University Family Physicians in 1995 from another practice in the area.
Dr. Barkley grew up in Chapel Hill and Greensboro, North Carolina, and attended Davidson College, where
he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion in 1979 and was captain of the swimming team as a senior.
After earning a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1986 from Wake Forest
University, he completed a three-year residency program in family
medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in 1989 and a faculty development
fellowship at CMC in 1990.
Because of Dr. Barkley’s interest in sports medicine, he pursued a
fellowship at Hughston Orthopedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. In
addition to seeing patients in private practice, Dr. Barkley has served
as team physician for his alma mater, Davidson College, for more than 15
years.
Dr. Barkley is a board-certified family physician. He is an active member
of Davidson United Methodist Church and has taken part in medical
mission trips to Belarus, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Cuba. Closer to home,
he serves as a volunteer physician at the Ada Jenkins Center free
medical clinic.
He and his wife, Catherine, live in Davidson with their three children. He
enjoys competing in sprint-distance triathlons and playing golf.
