We are a group of board-certified family-practice physicians. Our goal is to build compassionate, lasting doctor-patient relationships as we provide individuals and families with high-quality medical care and education. We believe that maintaining and promoting health are as important as treating illness. We are proud of our dedicated staff, who uphold the same ideals of quality, personal care.

Our practice was founded by Drs. Laurie Bumgarner, Jeff Cardwell, and Bruce Hughes, who met during residency training at Carolinas Medical Center. As the doctors planned to open their own practice, they saw a need for medical services in the rapidly growing University City area in northeast Charlotte. Together they opened a 1,600-square-foot office in the University Hospital medical park in July 1991.

Our practice has kept pace with the influx of new businesses and families to University City, adding physicians and staff to serve an increasing number of patients. After outgrowing a second office, the practice moved to our current freestanding, 14,000-square-foot facility in 1997. This office, located at the corner of Mallard Creek and Mallard Creek Church roads just off Interstate 85, offers a well-equipped space for providing primary care – and room to grow.

University Family Physicians is an independently owned, service-oriented practice. Though our size and location have changed over the years, we remain committed and grateful to each person who has made us a partner in health care.
